Currywurst with roasted potatoes

Currywurst is very popular in Germany and also in Austria and Italy (particularly in South Tyrol). It is a street food, invented by Hertha Heuwer in 1949 in Berlin: according to some sources, she apparently traded spirits for ketchup and curry powder with British soldiers stationed there after the war, the resulting sauce was poured over grilled pork sausages. She began selling it as a low cost street snack, and soon it became a success among the construction workers that were rebuilding the city.
There are many different recipes for currywurst… this is my personal version, it is easy to make but very tasty!

Bake in the oven (370° F) for about 15 minutes, until the potatoes will be golden or lightly brown.

  2. In the meantime, prepare the curry tomato sauce: peel the onion and chop it finely.

Put the onions in a pan, add a drizzle of oil, curry, smoked paprika and a pinch of cumin seeds. Fry on low heat for a few minutes.

  3. Add the tomato puree and a pinch of salt.

Cook on low heat for 5 minutes, then add sugar and vinegar. Stir and keep cooking for about 15 minutes, until the sauce will be quite thick.
