2 cubes ice

Steps

1) Preparing the Fruit

First, peel the mango and the banana: dice the mango and slice the banana into rounds. If you prefer, you can freeze the banana for at least 30 minutes beforehand for a colder and thicker smoothie. I used it at room temperature and added some ice cubes.

2) Preparing the Smoothie

As soon as the fruit is ready, place it in the blender. Add the milk (dairy or plant-based: I used oat milk), 1 tablespoon of sugar (you can add 2 if you prefer, or omit it entirely for a lighter version) and the ice cubes.

Turn on the blender and blend for about 1 minute or until you get a creamy mixture. If it is too thick, add a splash of milk. If it is too runny, add a bit more frozen banana or a few more ice cubes. Pour the smoothie into glasses and serve. Absolutely delicious!

Storage

The mango and banana smoothie is best enjoyed immediately after preparation to fully appreciate its freshness, flavor and nutritional value. However, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to 24–48 hours in an airtight container. Keep in mind that the presence of banana and milk (especially dairy) may slightly reduce its shelf life.

Freezing the smoothie is an excellent way to preserve it longer and have it ready whenever you need it. You can freeze it for up to 2–3 months.

Tips and Suggestions

While this mango and banana smoothie is already delicious on its own, a few small adjustments and additions can help you achieve the perfect result:

– Frozen Fruit, the Secret to Creaminess: For a super creamy, cold, and thick smoothie (without needing ice cubes, which can water down the flavor), always use frozen banana and/or mango. You can chop ripe fruit into pieces and freeze them in food bags. I didn’t have time to freeze mine, but I still loved it with the added ice cubes!

– Choose fully ripe mangoes and bananas. They are sweeter, easier to blend, and have a more intense, aromatic flavor.

– Start with a minimum amount of milk (about 120 ml). Add more, one tablespoon at a time, if your blender is struggling or if you prefer a thinner consistency.

– Your choice of milk depends largely on your taste preference, desired texture and dietary needs. For a neutral flavor and good creaminess, use dairy milk (whole or skimmed) or oat milk (as I did). For a more tropical twist, choose coconut milk, and for a light, delicate option, almond milk is perfect.

– Use a powerful blender to achieve a truly smooth, lump-free texture. Blend until completely homogenous.

– Serve immediately: Smoothies, in general, are best when freshly made. Sitting over time can alter both their texture and color.

Variations

– For an extra kick of flavor and freshness: You can add a small piece of fresh grated or chopped ginger, which pairs beautifully with mango, or a few fresh mint leaves for a super refreshing aroma.

– Boost the tropical notes: Add a few pieces of pineapple (fresh or frozen), or try adding half a peach or an apricot.

The Zero-Waste Nook

This is the space where we give food a second lease on life, turning kitchen scraps and leftover ingredients into delicious, creative creations. Nothing goes to waste here—just pure resourcefulness and flavor!

Since we just wrapped up that delicious Mango and Banana Smoothie, here are a few zero-waste ideas to make sure absolutely nothing from your prep ends up in the bin:

– Don’t Toss Those Banana Peels! Banana peels are packed with potassium. Chop them up and bury them directly in the soil of your houseplants or garden, or steep them in water for 48 hours to create a nutrient-rich “banana peel tea” for watering your plants. They will absolutely love it!

– Maximizing the Mango. Don’t throw away the large central pit or the peels just yet! Boil the mango pit (which always has some stubborn flesh attached) and the clean peels with a little water and a touch of sugar. Strain it, and you’ll have a gorgeous, tropical simple syrup perfect for sweetening iced tea, cocktails, or pouring over fruit salads.

– The “Too Ripe” Rescue: If you ever have bananas turning completely black on your counter, don’t wait—peel them, chop them into rounds, and toss them straight into a freezer bag. They become the perfect, instant base for your next thick smoothie or a quick batch of banana bread.
